Dani

After that big confession, I climbed off Maddox and we returned to eating our food in silence. When he didn’t react poorly to the idea of a ghost stalking me, that feeling of safety and ease returned. I never felt that with someone before.

“So there might be a good news, bad news situation if your stalker is a ghost,” he says carefully. “I would have to see the ghost to be sure that's what we’re dealing with. If it is a ghost, and not a ghoul or something like an Eldritch or Nightmare, then the good news is it can’t hurt you. Not for a long while.”

I shake my head. “I’ve met an Eldritch, and I’ve seen Nox’s Nightmare form, so it isn’t one of them. What’s the bad news?” God, I probably didn’t want to hear this.

“The bad news is, once the ghost is able to pick things up and become more corporeal, that's when the poor spirit starts to become confused and might hurt you.”

“Poor spirit?” I ask.

Maddox purses his lips together. “Yeah, it’s probably a spirit who doesn’t know how to leave this world, so he’s clung on to you. Has it ever touched you?”

“Yes. It’s been able to graze my cheek, but it barely feels like anything more than a light caress. It just freaks me the fuck out.”

“Rightfully so. Real ghosts are scary looking, especially when you don’t understand what they are or if they mean you any harm.”

I nod frantically, thankful Maddox voiced all of this out loud. “You really think it can’t hurt me?”

“Nope, if its touch feels more like a caress or a light graze, you should be fine. But being close to the portal and with so much magic, it might speed up the process. So we really should find a way to help the ghost move on. Has Nox seen it?”

“No, not yet. Since Nox has shadows and, I don’t know, my ghost looks like a shadow, I was hopeful he might see it. But it seems like my ghost is as scared of Nox as everyone else is. So, I haven’t told him about it.”

Maddox nods toward the door. “You know I’m going to need to meet Nox, right?”

Is it wrong that I just want to keep Nox and Maddox separated? That I want to keep both of them to myself? I know Maddox isn’t like any of my celebrity acquaintances. The social climbers who will use my name until they find someone richer or more famous to upgrade to. No, Maddox isn’t anything like them, and he’s made that abundantly clear over the last several hours, and, hell, even on our date.

But not only is Nox my closest friend, I just don’t want the two of them to hit it off and ditch me. Something my previous friends did as well.

“Dani, please.” He holds up his hand just as I’m about to interrupt. “I know you’re telling me the truth. Nox probably isn’t your stalker, but he’s still extremely powerful and feared for a reason.
